What to do now

Clogged Drain Right Now? Do This First

  1. 1Stop running water in the house: no laundry, dishwasher, showers or flushing.
  2. 2Skip chemical drain cleaners. They rarely clear a main line and can damage older pipes and burn skin.
  3. 3If water is coming up in the lowest drain (basement, floor drain or tub), the problem is likely your main line, not one fixture.
  4. 4Call us. We'll ask a few questions and tell you whether it can wait or needs someone tonight.
Diagnosis

Is It One Drain or the Main Line?

One slow sink or tub usually means a local clog: hair, soap or grease close to the fixture. That's a quick fix.

If several drains back up at once, the toilet gurgles when the washer drains, or water rises in a tub or floor drain, the clog is in the main line. Main line clogs get worse with every flush. They need a cable machine or hydro jetting, not a plunger.

Methods

Snaking vs. Hydro Jetting

A drain snake (cable machine) cuts a path through the clog. It's fast and the right first step for most stoppages.

Hydro jetting cleans the full width of the pipe with high-pressure water. It's the better fix for heavy grease, recurring clogs and roots that have worked into older clay side sewers, as long as the pipe is in good enough shape. On older Edmonds lines we usually run a camera first to check.

Local knowledge

Why Edmonds Drains Clog

A large share of Edmonds houses went up between the 1950s and 1970s — ramblers and split-levels in Seaview, Westgate, Five Corners and Lake Ballinger. Many still drain through their original clay or concrete side sewer. Those short pipe sections have a joint every few feet, and the tall firs and cedars that shade so many Edmonds lots send roots straight into them.

Hillside homes on the slopes above the Sound can also have long, steep runs where grease and wipes settle at the bends. Downtown, in the Bowl and along the Highway 99 corridor, condos, restaurants and apartment buildings mostly see grease and wipes in shared lines.

Drain Cleaning FAQ

Do you offer 24-hour emergency drain cleaning in Edmonds?

Yes. Someone answers our line 24/7, weekends and holidays included. Call and we'll give you a realistic arrival window for your Edmonds address.

How do I know if my main sewer line is clogged?

Watch for several drains backing up at once, gurgling toilets, or water rising in the lowest drain in the house. One slow sink is usually a local clog.

Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?

Usually, but not always. Badly cracked or deteriorated pipe can be damaged by high pressure. We check with a camera first when the pipe is old or the clog keeps coming back.

Should I use a chemical drain cleaner?

We don't recommend it. Chemicals rarely clear main line clogs, can damage older pipes, and are dangerous for the plumber who clears the drain afterward.

How much does emergency drain cleaning cost?

Most single-fixture clogs cost $150–$350. Main line work and hydro jetting cost more. We confirm the price before any work starts.

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Repeat clogs usually mean roots, grease buildup or a sag or break in the line. A camera inspection shows the cause so you fix it once.

Drain Backing Up? Call Now.
